This Mary Alice Hadley pottery plate is a large 11" dinner/serving plate -- an estate item in excellent condition that looks as if it has never been used. It is marked on the back with the familiar mark of the Mary Alice Hadley Pottery Co. in Louisville, KY.

Since Louisville is my home town I am very familiar with the story of the young socialite with an art degree who began in the 1940s creating informal earthenware pieces for table use featuring her own simple folk art painted decoration. When friends of Mary Alice and her husband were served on her dinnerware during Ohio River outings on the Hadley houseboat they began asking the artist if she might make dishes for them. This is how it started and the rest is history. Even though Mary Alice herself died of illness in the 1960s her designs are still being produced by the original small factory on Story Ave. near downtown Louisville, and their popularity continues to grow world wide.

This 11" diameter piece is considered a dinner plate, but it's heavy construction and larger than average size would make it an excellent serving plate for main courses. Because of its classic basically blue colors on neutral background it also blends in nicely with lots of other dishes you might be using at a meal, but it's design stands out in testament to your artistic taste.
